Benefits backed by science

Stress

Valerian root contains a number of compounds that research suggests work to regulate your mood, promote calmness and reduce anxiety. It works by increasing GABA levels in the brain (a chemical messenger that helps regulate nerve impulses in your brain and nervous system), improving stress response and maintaining adequate levels of mood-stabilising brain chemicals, but without the pronounced sedative effects of a drug like valium.

Research shows that supplementing passion flower may reduce symptoms of anxiety. Like valerian root, passion flower increases GABA levels in the brain, which induces sleep and may also reduce the anxiety so often associated with insomnia. In addition, passion flower is known to be a muscle relaxant, easing away tension that can make it more difficult to drift off to sleep.

L-tryptophan takes a different route. It may enhance the synthesis of ‘happy hormone’ serotonin, which is known to keep mood balanced and is required for other cognitive functions. Increased L-tryptophan levels are associated with better moods.

Sleep

Valerian root has been shown to increase GABA levels in the brain, which research suggests also works to reduce the amount of time it takes to fall asleep, as well as improve sleep quality and quantity.

In general, there is good evidence to suggest that passion flower relieves symptoms of anxiety as a result of the increased GABA levels in the brain that it induces.

L-tryptophan has been shown to have an impact on sleep quality – helping you to easier fall asleep, promoting sound sleep and helping you to wake up feeling rested. L-tryptophan is converted into serotonin in your body. This conversion may help you have a more sound sleep, and may also support relaxation.

If you suffer from stress related issues during the day, we'd recommend taking earlier in the day and with a meal and water to help absorption and if you suffer from sleep problems, to take in the evening. Avoid taking with caffeine as this can prevent absorption and increase excretion.

I am pregnant. Is Relaxation Blend safe for me?

We would not recommend supplementing with Relaxation Blend during pregnancy as passion flower may induce contractions and the side effects of the other two ingredients have not been sufficiently tested. Consult your healthcare professional before supplementing Relaxation Blend.

Are there any interactions or side effects?

Valerian root is largely safe with few side effects being reported. Those that have been are headaches, dizziness, itchiness and gastrointestinal disturbances.
