How do I know if iron is right for me?

Iron supplementation is ideal for those who do not get enough of the mineral from their diet – especially those who follow a plant-based diet. Dietary iron comes in two forms: heme (found in animal products) and non-heme (found in plant-based foods like nuts and fortified grains). Heme iron is more easily absorbed by the body because non-heme iron needs multiple steps to be absorbed, so vegans and vegetarians represent groups at risk.

What are the common symptoms of iron deficiency?

Symptoms can include:

Bruising quickly or easily

Tiredness and lack of energy

Shortness of breath

Noticeable heartbeats (heart palpitations)

Should I consult a healthcare professional before taking iron supplements?

Getting too much iron (iron overload) can be dangerous, so it is advised that you speak to your doctor or other healthcare professional before using iron supplements.

When is the best time to take Iron supplements?

Iron is best absorbed when taken on an empty stomach, with water or fruit juice about 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. However, to lessen the possibility of stomach upset, iron may be taken with food or immediately after meals. Minerals such as calcium, and zinc appear to interfere with iron absorption. We recommend taking your iron supplement a couple of hours before or after other minerals to maximize absorption.
