Beta-carotene is a naturally occurring plant pigment responsible for the yellow and red colours in nature, as seen in fruits, vegetables, flowers, and autumn leaves. It is converted to vitamin A when metabolised in the body, which is essential for normal growth and development, immune system function, skin and bone health and vision. Studies show that an adequate intake of beta-carotene is associated with reduced risk of chronic health problems.

Research suggests that beta-carotene:

  • Boosts immune function

  • Supports cognitive function

  • Maintains eye, skin and bone health

  • Contains powerful antioxidant properties

  • Protects against certain chronic health conditions

Benefits backed by science

Skin

Beta-carotene is regarded as a nutrient that can protect and provide skin health from the inside. Human skin is continuously exposed and, as a consequence, may undergo alterations leading to photo ageing, inflammation, immune dysfunction, imbalanced epidermal homeostasis, or other skin disorders. Beta-carotene could fight these. Beta-carotene can be used as an oral sun protectant in combination with sunscreens for the prevention of sunburn and has been shown to be effective either alone or in combination with other carotenoids or antioxidant vitamins. Adequate beta-carotene levels in the body may also contribute to a more long-term defence against UV light.

Eyes

Beta-carotene helps with eye health by keeping the surface of the eye, or the cornea, moist and healthy. Deficiencies often lead to dry eyes, which can, in turn, lead to corneal ulcers, clouding of the front of the eye and vision loss. Beta-carotene can also help to enhance night and peripheral vision and also helps reduce the oxidative stress light puts on your eyes.

Immunity

The immune system protects our body against infections, cancer cells and foreign substances. Studies suggest that beta-carotene can enhance immune cell function. Early studies demonstrate the ability of beta-carotene to prevent infections. Some clinical trials have found that beta-carotene supplementation improves several biomarkers of immune function, including the number of white blood cells (the cells responsible for protecting the body against disease and foreign invaders).

Brain

Beta-carotene is a powerful antioxidant that protects our cells from oxidative damage (which is linked to degenerative conditions such as congnitive impairment, cancer and heart disease) and fight free radicals. Beta-carotene may improve your cognitive function, according to some studies, due to its antioxidant properties.
